Gotaway

In the early 90’s a unique new travel show called Getway commenced on Australian television. A few years earlier a couple of young Aussie tragic travellers who had met overseas moved to Ballarat, Victoria. They had met overseas and returned to their home state to try out life in suburbia with marriage, the white picket fence and a couple of kids. While this proved to be a successful venture it was pinned to a single location and the letters “a” and “d” needed to be added to the word venture. This was achieved by buying an old coach and converting it to a motorhome. And inspired by the exploits of the Getaway crew and all the viewers stuck in their lounges watching it, a bus aptly named Gotaway headed off into the sunset with an excited young family aboard.

A quarter of a century later the bus is a distant but enduring memory but its name still lives on and is evolving into a world that never existed back in those old days. The internet, social media, blogs and Facebook and phones that take pictures. Inspired by a daughter returning from overseas infected with the travel bug and her desire to hear more of my travel exploits, this blog you are reading has been rebranded with the name it should have had from the beginning. Gotaway. With her knowledge and assistance, a previous old blog attempt called antarcticshane, has formed the foundation of Gotaway. From here on I hope to be a bit more regular with posts of my current trips and maybe add in a couple of retro trips of times that I got away.
